Downtown Grand Rapids is vibrant, walkable and ever-growing, with over 75 dining, shopping and entertainment venues, hotels, museums and churches all situated within a 5 minute’s walking distance from each other. Some of the most well known downtown hot spots include the Amway Grand Hotel and JW Marriott Hotel, Van Andel Arena sports and music complex (playground of the Grand Rapids Griffins hockey team), Deltaplex Arena & Conference Center, DeVos Place Performance Hall (where the Grand Rapids Symphony can often be found performing), John Ball Zoo, Fountain Street Church where special speaker events are often hosted, Grand Rapids Art Museum, Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, and the city’s tallest building, the Riverhouse Condominiums high end housing complex.
Riverside Park, Rosa Parks Circle, Calder Plaza and Ah-Nab-Awen Park are the sites of numerous outdoor events that take place throughout the year including ice skating, swing dancing, music concerts, and the 3-day ‘Celebration On the Grand’ annual downtown festival. ArtPrize and Laughfest are two major community events which take place throughout the entire downtown area and draw visitors from all over the country. Lying beyond the outskirts of the city is the popular midwest tourist destination Frederik Meijer Garden & Sculpture Park, Heritage Hill urban historic district, and Eastown.
A number of recent and ongoing development projects have brought important change to to downtown Grand Rapids and helped solidify its reputation as a top national downtown spot, most notably its ‘Medical Mile’ which contains the Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital Complex, Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital and Michigan State University’s Secchia Center Medical School, among others. The most recent revitalization projects are currently taking place on the outlying edge of downtown and include a mixed residential-retail complex ‘Tapestry Square’ along with a European-style ‘Downtown Marketplace’ row of vendors offering artisan goods and featuring a seasonal outdoor farmer’s market where fresh produce will also be available.
