The Ottawa Hills neighborhood, on the southeast side of Grand Rapids, is a sought after, historic neighborhood with great architecture, and proximity to many of the city’s finest amenities. Bordering the suburb of East Grand Rapids on one side, Ottawa Hills sits on the former site of the Grand Rapids Golf Club. In 1922, the flagsticks came down and homes started going up, with construction continuing in to the 1950’s. Ottawa Hills High School was once in the center of the neighborhood, later becoming Iroquois Middle when OHHS moved to a new building south of Burton. The Grand Rapids Christian Schools bought the site in the last decade, and rebuilt Grand Rapids Christian Elementary on Iroquois Street.
Ottawa Hills has a very strong neighborhood association made up of long-term and newer residents. OHNA hosts a number of cool neighborhood events, including an ice cream social, a tour of gardens, and a neighborhood clean up. Every 4th of July, the long-standing Hollyhock Lane Parade, in existence for over 80 years, makes its finish in Ottawa Hills, and the neighborhood association plays a critical role. Community is strong in Ottawa Hills, and there is plenty to do.
Demand for homes in Ottawa Hills, by folks looking to get in to the neighborhood, greatly exceeds the supply of opportunities that come up each year. To move in to the neighborhood, you need a good plan, and have to be ready to take action when your opportunity pops up. Contact me to discuss making Ottawa Hills your next home. I have worked with several families to get them in to the neighborhood, and as often as possible, I talk with current residents about when they might sell.
