One of the largest urban historic districts in the country, the Heritage Hill neighborhood lies on the outskirts of downtown Grand Rapids in an area of about 3,500 acres bordered by Crescent Street, Union Avenue, Pleasant Street and Lafayette Avenue. Its 1,300 houses employ just about every style of American architecture that exists, from Colonial Revival to Italianate. It has been added to the National Register of Historic Places as well as the Michigan State Register of Historic Sites and was recently designated by the American Planning Association as ‘2012’s Great Places in America’. It sits within the Grand Rapids Public Schools District. Each May, the Heritage Hill Association sponsors a weekend tour of select historic homes.
