Alger Heights
Alger Heights is a small neighborhood defined by 28th Street, Eastern, Burton, and Kalamazoo in Grand Rapids. Though small, Alger Heights boasts numerous small local businesses, historic homes, a walkable community, excellent schools, and a number of yearly events, including the Halloween 5k Run and more. Alger Heights is abundant in parks, has a tight-knit neighborhood association, and enjoys the services of the Seymour branch of Grand Rapids Public Library. Quoted to be a great family community by former residents, Alger Heights is simply a wonderful place to live.
Schools:
There are several private and public schools within the Alger Heights area, including Brookside Elementary, Shawnee Elementary, Immaculate Heart of Mary Private School, Oakdale Christian School, Vista Charter School, Alger Middle School, Grand Rapids Christian Middle School, Ottawa Hills High School, and Grand Rapids Christian High School. Alger Heights is proud to support a diverse and excellent education for its students, and is in the Grand Rapids School District.
Library:
The Seymour Library is a branch of the Grand Rapids Public Library system. Located on Eastern Avenue in Alger Heights, Seymour offers wi-fi, books, books on audio, CDs, videos, and more. With free parking, a newly renovated space, and plenty of activities and events for everyone to enjoy, Seymour Library is a wonderful asset to the Alger Heights community.
Business District:
Alger Heights, though small, is big enough to have its own business district. With a variety of ethnic grocery stores, a number of local pizza places (JB’s Pizza Parlor, Mineo’s Pizza House), a well-known and liked breakfast restaurant (Real Food Café LLC), and even a local ice cream parlor (Sundaes in the Heights), Alger Heights enjoys supporting its residents with an explosion of variety. Additionally, Alger Heights has several fashion boutiques, a large local hardware store undergoing reconstruction, and a large local fruit market.

A mere 1.205 square miles, Alger Heights has a population of 4,923 and a population density of 4,087 per square mile. The average income per household for males is $48,437. The amount of males and females differs in favor of females by a mere 400. The median age for males in the area is 29.6, and the median age for females is 32.7. The average household size is 2.5, whereas the average family size is 3.1. 51.6% of residents are married-couple families, and 28.4% are married-couple families with children. Single moms make up 6.7%. Alger Heights boasts 5% of foreign residents. The rest of the area is 65% white, 23% African American, 6.5% Hispanic, and 1.5% Asian, making Alger Heights a very diverse area.
